With Mercury Gone, Where Will Lincoln Go?

The Ford Motor Company has announced the pending demise of its Mercury brand, at one time the premium brand wedged between Ford and Lincoln. Founded by Edsel Ford in 1939, Mercury has never quite lived up to expectations although at its peak in the late 1970s, it sold more than 500,000 units annually.

R.I.P. Mercury

Those sales numbers eventually dropped to the point where fewer than 100,000 Mercury models were sold in 2009. 2010 will be the last year for Mercury, leaving Lincoln dealers with fewer models to sell, at least for now. That means Ford will bolster the Lincoln line offering new and refreshed models to strengthen the brand in addition to important new technologies and powertrains.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally has not contacted me yet for my advice which is a pity for him. I have some terrific ideas for bolstering the Lincoln brand, providing fresh direction for Ford's luxury marque. Alan, if you are reading this, here is what you can do for Lincoln:

Big Sedan -- The Town Car will soon be history, leaving the MKS to take over as the flagship sedan. Unfortunately, this car is too small for livery purposes, an area where Ford does make some money. With the Hyundai Equus hitting the market later this year, all of those black limousines you see on the road may soon be Korean makes unless Ford acts and quick. One way to do that is to simply stretch out the platform of the MKS by a foot and sell that sedan in all wheel drive. It'll give livery folks the car they need and match what the European brands have to offer in handling.

Product Differentiation -- Much has been said about Lincoln's apparent lack of original product, though I believe that the MKS and Taurus are significantly different. Beyond that, Ford needs to develop models unique to Lincoln in order to be relevant. Tackling the compact market with a stylish car that takes on the upcoming Cadillac ATS, Mercedes B-Class and BMW 1-Series is a must. Heck, take the Focus platform and drop a unique body on it to build the car. But do it. The MKZ hybrid is a good idea, but a compact dedicated Lincoln will be the entry level model Lincoln needs to win.

Unique Powertrains -- Ford says that it will develop unique powertrains exclusive to Lincoln, but what does that mean? Minimally, an eight-speed automatic would help and could and should be the standard transmission across Lincoln's line up. In addition, perhaps a dedicated Lincoln EcoBoot of, let's say 3.0-liters would be the V-6 engine that could replace every V8. Yes, a turbo-diesel would be a bold move to take, but I don't believe the market would support the engine. Unless an international market could support the engine as well.

New Day

If this was Ford in 2005 I would be worried. But Bill Ford is out of the way and Alan Mulally is calling shots, the most confident person to run Ford in my lifetime. Mulally will shepherd Mercury's demise and improve Lincoln; by 2015 things should be radically different inside of Lincoln showrooms, a rejuvenated brand freed from the shackles of Mercury.

All things being equal, there is no better place worth buying a cheap and high quality automobile than a salvage car auction. If you want a good a good buy when thinking of a salvage car, the next few paragraphs will be of immense help to you.

Going to auto bid venues after every other person has settled in is not a brilliant idea if you want a quality buy. You must be at the bid venue as early as you possibly can to get yourself familiar with the environment. Tapping from the experiences and tips from other bidders help a lot. If you are not too knowledgeable about a particular automobile of your choice, you can meet other who can be of help to you at the venue.

Though salvaged cars are not as poor in quality as most people think, it is still important to take a careful look at them before putting in a bid. Look beyond the appearance, have a thorough check on the engines, brake system and clutch before taking a decision. Just because a vehicle is badly wrecked does not mean it has a poor engine. Taking an experienced mechanic along with you is an additional advantage. The more unattractive an automobile looks, the fewer the number of people paying attention to it. This helps to increase your chances of arriving at a good buy.

Regard every buyer as a competitor; everyone wants a best buy, refuse to swallow everything you are told hook-line-sinker. In salvage auto auction venues, everyone is out to make the best of what he can get; the auctioneer inclusive. While the auctioneer will stop short at nothing in projecting every car in good light, a bidder will check every department of an automobile. You want the best at the most affordable bid, while the auctioneer wants his profit maximized.

The hallmark of an experienced bidder is to maintain his composure as much as he possibly can. Never allow the occasion to overwhelm you, be as composed as you can ever be. Be well articulated and resist all temptation to go beyond your budgetary targets. Always weigh the implication of every bid you make before eventually committing yourself. At salvage auto auctions, know where your strength lies, and avoid stretching your financial strength out of measure.

Avoid paying more than what you ought to pay when you attend salvage car auctions.

Advantages and Disadvantages on Group Health Insurance VS Individual Health Insurance

In this article we will explore the reasons that motivate employers to get group health insurance for employees and we will look at the advantages and disadvantages from both points of view.

Group Health Insurance VS Individual Private Health Insurance

Probably the most significant distinguishing characteristic of group insurance is the substitution of group underwriting for individual underwriting. In group cases, no individual evidence of insurability is usually required, and benefit levels can be substantial, with few, if any, important limitations.

Group underwriting normally is not concerned with the health or other insurability aspects of any particular individual. Instead, it aims to obtain a group of individual lives or, what is even more important, an aggregation of such groups of lives that will yield a predictable rate of mortality or morbidity. If a sufficient number of groups of lives is obtained, and if these groups are reasonably homogeneous in nature, then the mortality or morbidity rate will be predictable. The point is that the group becomes the unit of underwriting, and insurance principles may be applied to it just as in the case of the individual. To assure that the groups obtained will be reasonably homogeneous, the underwriting process in group insurance aims to control adverse selection by individuals within a group.

In underwriting group insurance, then, certain important features should be present that either are inherent in the nature of the group itself or may be applied in a positive way to avoid serious adverse selection such as:

Insurance Incidental to the Group: The insurance should be incidental to the group; that is, the members of the group should have come together for some purpose other than to obtain insurance. For example, the group insurance furnished to the employees of a given employer must not be the feature that motivates the formation and existence of the group.

Flow of Persons through the Group: There should be a steady flow of persons through the group; that is, there must be an influx of new young lives into the group and an out flow from the group of the older and impaired lives. With groups of actively working employees, it may be assumed that they are in average health.

Automatic Determination of Benefits: Group insurance underwriting commonly requires an automatic basis for determining the amount of benefits on individual lives, which is beyond the control of the employer or employees. If the amount of benefits taken were completely optional, it would be possible to select against the insurer because those in poor health would tend to insure heavily and the healthy ones might tend to elect minimum coverage.

As the group mechanism has evolved, however, insurers have responded to demands from the marketplace, particularly large employers, for more flexibility in the selection of benefits. This flexibility typically is expressed in optional amounts of life and health insurance in excess of basic coverage provided by the employer and in more health care financing choices. Also, increasingly popular cafeteria plans allow participating employees to select among an array of benefits using a predetermined allowance of employer funds. Individuals select, subject to certain basic coverage's being required, a combination of benefits that best meet his or her individual needs.

Minimum Participation by the Group: Another underwriting control is the requirement that substantially all eligible persons in a given group be covered by insurance. In plans in which the employee pays a portion of the premium (contributory), generally at least 75 percent of the eligible employees must join the plan if coverage is to be effective. In the case of noncontributory plans, 100 percent participation is required. By covering a large proportion of a given group, the insurance company gains a safeguard against an undue proportion of substandard lives. In cases in which employees refuse the insurance for religious or other reasons that do not involve any elements of selection, this rule is relaxed.

Third Party Sharing of Cost: A portion of the cost of a group plan ideally should be borne by the employer or some third party, such as a labor union or trade association. The noncontributory employer-pay-all plan is simple, and it gives the employer full control over the plan. It provides for insurance of all eligible employees and thus, eliminates any difficulties involved in connection with obtaining the consent of a sufficient number of employees to meet participation requirements. Also, there is no problem of distributing the cost among various employees, as in the contributory plan.

Contributory plans usually are less costly to the employer. Hence, with employee contributions, the employer is likely to arrange for more adequate protection for the employees. It can also be argued that, if the employee contributes toward his or her insurance, he or she will be more impressed with its value and will appreciate it more. On the other hand, the contributory plan has a number of disadvantages. Its operation is more complicated, and this at times, increases administrative cost considerably.

Each employee must consent to contribute toward his or her insurance, and as stated before, a minimum percentage of the eligible group must consent to enter the arrangement. New employees entering the business must be informed of their insurance privilege. If the plan is contributory, employees may not be entitled to the insurance until they have been with the company for a period of time. If they do not agree to be covered by the plan within a period of 31 days, they may be required to provide satisfactory evidence of insurability to become eligible. Some noncontributory plans also have these probationary periods.

Efficient Administrative Organization: A single administrative organization should be able and willing to act on behalf of the insured group. In the usual case, this is the employer. In the case of a contributory plan, there must be a reasonably simple method, such as payroll deduction, by which the master policy owner can collect premiums. An automatic method is desirable for both an administrative and underwriting perspective. A number of miscellaneous controls of underwriting significance are typically used in group insurance plans, but the preceding discussion permits an appreciation of the group underwriting underwriting theory. The discussion applies to groups with a large number of employees.

A majority of the groups, however, are not large. The group size is a significant factor in the underwriting process. In smaller plans, more restrictive underwriting practices relating to adverse section are used. These may include less liberal contract provisions, simple health status questions, and in some cases, detailed individual underwriting of group members.

Group Policy: A second characteristic of group insurance is the use of a group policy (contract) held by the owner as group policyholder and booklet-certificates or other summary evidence of insurance held by plan participants. Certificates provide information on the plan provisions and the steps required to file claims. The use of certificates and a master contract constitutes one of the sources of economy under the group approach. The master contract is a detailed document setting forth the contractual relationship between the group contract owner and the insurance company. The insured persons under the contract, usually employees and their beneficiaries, are not actually parties to the contract, although they may enforce their rights as third party beneficiaries. The four party relationship between the employer, insurer, employee, and dependents in a group insurance plan can create a number of interesting and unusual problems that are common only to group insurance.

Lower Cost: A third feature of group insurance is that it is usually lower-cost protection than that which is available in individual insurance. The nature of the group approach permits the use of mass distribution and mass administration methods that afford economies of operation not available in individual insurance. Also, because group insurance is not usually underwritten on an individual basis, the premiums are based upon an actuarial assessment of the group as a whole, so a given healthy individual can perhaps buy insurance at a lower cost. Employer subsidization of the cost is a critical factor in group insurance plan design. Probably the most significant savings in the cost of marketing group insurance lies in the fact that group commissions absorb a much smaller proportion of total premiums than commission for individual contracts.

The marketing system relieves the agent or broker of many duties, responsibilities, and expenses normally associated with selling or servicing of individual insurance. Because of the large premiums involved in many group insurance cases, the commission rates are considerably lower than for individual contracts and are usually graded downward as the premium increases. Some large group insurance buyer's deal directly with insurance companies and commissions are eliminated. In these cases, however, fees frequently are paid to the consultants involved. The nature of the administrative procedures permits simplified accounting techniques. The mechanics of premium collection are less involved, and experience refund procedures much simplified because there id only one party with whom to deal with such as the group policy owner.

Of course, the issuance of a large number of individual contracts is avoided and, because of the nature of group selection, the cost of medical examinations and inspection reports is minimized. Also, regulatory filings and other requirements are minimized. In the early days of group insurance, administration was simple. That is no longer true. Even with group term life insurance, for which there is no cash value, the push for accelerated death benefits, assignment to viatical companies, and estate or business planning record keeping means that the administration of coverage may be as complex as with an individual policy.

Flexibility: in contrast to individual contracts that must be taken as written, the larger employer usually has options in the design and preparation of the group insurance contract. Although the contracts follow a pattern and include certain standard provisions, there is considerably more flexibility here than in the case of individual contracts. The degree of flexibility permitted is, of course, a function of the size of the group involved. The group insurance program usually is an integral part of an employee benefit program and, in most cases, the contract can be molded to meet the objectives of the contract owner, as long as the request do not entail complicated administrative procedures, open the way to possibly serious adverse selection, or violate legal requirements.

Experience Rating: Another special feature of group insurance is that premiums often are subject to experience rating. The experience of the individual group may have an important bearing on dividends or premium-rate adjustments. The larger and, hence, the more reliable the experience of the particular group, the greater is the weight attached to its own experience in any single year. The knowledge that premiums net of dividends or premium rate adjustments will be based on the employers own experience gives the employer a vested interest in maintaining a favorable loss and expense record. For the largest employers, insurers may agree to complicated procedures to satisfy the employer's objectives because most such cases are experience rated and reflect the increased cost.

Some insurers experience rate based on the class or type of industry, or even based on the type of contract. For small groups, most insurance companies' use pooled rates under which a uniform rate is applied to all such groups, although it is becoming more common to apply separate pooled rates for groups with significantly better or worse experience than that of the total class. The point at which a group is large enough to be eligible for experience rating varies from company to company, based on that insurer's book of business and experience. The size and frequency of medical claims vary considerably across countries and among geographic regions within a country and must be considered in determining a group insurance rate. The composition (age, sex, and income level) of a group will also affect the experience of the group and, similarly, will be an important underwriting consideration.
Advantages and Limitations of the Group Mechanism.

Advantages: The group insurance mechanism has proved to be a remarkably effective solution to the need for employee benefits for a number of reasons. The utilization of mass-distribution techniques has extended protection to large numbers of person s with little or no life or health insurance. The increasing complexity of industrial service economies has brought large numbers of persons together, and the group mechanism has enabled insurance companies to reach vast numbers of individuals within a relatively short period and at low cost. Group insurance also has extended protection to a large number of uninsurable persons. Equally important has been the fact that the employer usually pays a large share of the cost. Moreover, in most countries, including the United States, the deductibility of employer contributions and the favorable tax treatment of the benefits to employees make it a tax effective vehicle with which to provide benefits.

Another significant factor, and one of the more cogent motivations for the rapid development of group insurance, has been the continuing governmental role in the security benefits area. Within the United States, Old-Age. Survivors, Disability, and Health Insurance programs has expanded rapidly, but many observers believe that, had not group insurance provided substantial sums of life insurance, health insurance, and retirement protection, social insurance would have developed even more rapidly. As economies worldwide continue to reduce the size and scope of social insurance programs, we can expect the demand for group based security to grow even more.

Disadvantages: From the viewpoint of the employee, group insurance has one great limitation- the temporary nature of the coverage. Unless an employee converts his or her coverage to an individual policy which is usually ore expensive and provides less liberal coverage, the employee loses his or her insurance protection if the group plan is terminated and often also at retirement because employment is terminated. Group life and health protection is continued after retirement in a significant proportion of cases today in the United States, but often at reduced levels. Recently, with the introduction of a new U.S. accounting standard (FAS 106) requiring that the cost of such benefits be accrued and reflected in financial statements, an increasing number of employers have discontinued post retirement life and health benefits entirely. When such continued protection is not available, the temporary nature of the coverage is a serious limitation.

Retiree group health insurance often is provided as a supplement to Medicare. Another problem of potential significance involves individuals who may be lulled into complacency by having large amounts of group insurance during their working years. Many of these persons fail to recognize the need for, or are unwilling to face the cost of, individual insurance. Perhaps of even greater significance is the fact that the flexibility of the group approach is limited to the design of the master policy and does not extend to the individual covered employees. Furthermore, group plans typically fail to provide the mechanism for any analysis of the financial needs of the individual which is a service that is normally furnished by the agent or other advisor. Many agents, however, discuss group insurance coverage with individuals as a foundation for discussing the need for additional amounts of individual life and health insurance.

Auto Accidents in Pennsylvania - UM UIM litigation /

UM / UIM Litigation in Pennsylvania - The game has changed Traditionally motorist case in Pennsylvania, uninsured or underinsured refused arbitration. Automobile Insurance said that this type of claims provisions should be subject to arbitration rather than litigation in court. In general, the plaintiff would choose an arbitrator. The insurance company will select an arbitrator. These two arbitrators then select a third "neutral" arbitrator. Thecase hearing would be in a much less formal than the full-blown jury trial. For example, medical records, police reports, expert reports, etc. would be subject to arbitration, without the need for doctors, experts, witnesses, etc. to call to testify live. The decision of the arbitration panel will be binding - that is no appeal (except in very exceptional circumstances). One thing that a few days would take to try to in a courtroom before a jury, and that would cost each of severalthousand dollars to litigate, may be submitted for arbitration in the afternoon for a fraction of the cost. This process is so beneficial to consumers, the Pennsylvania Insurance Department has the mandatory arbitration clause in the policy of auto insurance in Pennsylvania. Then in 2005 the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the Insurance Department has no authority to arbitration mandate as UM UIM. The Court considers that it is no longer mandatory under the law of Pennsylvaniathat UM / UIM cases submitted to binding arbitration. Therefore, insurance companies now have the opportunity now to resolve UIM / UIM cases in arbitration. Insurance companies have started to write insurance policies in several ways: (a) binding arbitration as before, (2) for arbitration if a party has requested, (3) for arbitration if both parties consent, or (4) for arbitration than he The carrier is requested. It is increasingly common forUM / UIM cases filed in the courts of Pennsylvania. Under the rules of Civil Procedure, civil cases arising from road accidents are in the country are: (1) where the accident occurred, (2) in the province where a defendant can be served or (3) Where A company in the country regularly conduct defendant company. Venue is proper for a defendant it is good to all defendants. As part of a UM or UIM case, adding that the insuranceA defendant in the lawsuit following a car accident have more opportunities to applicants who in many cases. Most insurance companies that write auto insurance in Pennsylvania regularly does business in many provinces across the Commonwealth. Under the rules of Civil Procedure, the insurance companies can be sued in a province in which they regularly do business. Insurance companies have responded to this unexpected occurrenceaspect of their unilateral removal of mandatory binding arbitration by the inclusion of "forum selection clauses in their insurance policies. A forum selection clause is a provision that the policy provides that if a dispute between the insured and the carrier to a UM or UIM case, the matter can be discussed in a country in particular. These clauses often reduce the number of viable sites in accordance with the rules of civil procedure in Pennsylvania. The validity and relevanceof the forum selection clauses in the Context of cases UM UIM / by the Higher Court of Pennsylvania recently addressed, in the case of O'Hara v. In this case, the Superior Court of Pennsylvania ruled that a clause in the form of the election policy that meets all UM / UIM cases are made in the country and the state of domicile "legal" - where the life insured - the insured at the time of the accident is valid and enforceable. How to Buy a Mercedes-Benz the Easy Way!

Mercedes buyers are spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing where to buy a Mercedes-Benz from - or so it would seem.

Mercedes-Benz ownership is something many of my local Sydney residents desire for years prior to obtaining.

In fact it's right up there with the dream of owning a Rolex watch, a luxury boat and a luxury home.

So when you get to the stage where you are ready to buy your Mercedes-Benz, you want to make sure you buy well.

Does having more Mercedes Dealers to choose from mean a better deal?

More choice means more competition, which is good for Mercedes-Benz buyers. Since most Mercedes buyers in Sydney fully understand economic forces, it goes without saying that Mercedes-Benz Dealers are keen to win your business.

Are all Sydney Mercedes-Benz dealers the same?

Absolutely not.

Each one is different in certain ways - and I don't mean just in location.

When looking to buy a car, and especially a Mercedes-Benz, elements such as service, price and availability will factor into in your Benz dealings. Most dealers will have a good level of service and availability.

Essential questions you must ask to avoid paying too much - or even worse buying the wrong car:

These are a few of the vital questions you really need to ask yourself before you venture into the car showroom.

Questions like: Which Mercedes-Benz model will suit my needs more? A-Class, the small Benz hatch? perhaps an M-Class for the large 4wd size Mercedes, or are you more suited to a CLK-Class coupe? The more you understand your car needs the more you will be able be clear about what the right car for you is.

Why is it so essential for you to know in advance what the right car is?

You need to be in control of the Mercedes purchase, not the salesperson. If you do your research first (the internet is a great place to start) then you will be able to make a better decision.

Some dealership staff will try and promote certain Benz models that are in stock because those vehicles are almost certainly costing interest as they sit there. Be firm with what you want before you accept the first car suggested!

How do you know if you are being sold, or if you are doing the buying?

Look for a salesperson who asks questions. If you are being "told" what to buy rather than "asked" then you are dealing with a pushy sales person. A salesperson who sincerely seeks your exact requirements is probably serving your needs well.

Do not buy until you are comfortable to make a commitment and be prepared to stand by your decision.

If you are uncertain or in doubt, don't be in a hurry to make a decision. A rushed purchase will often lead to buyer's remorse and you may regret your decision to buy a Mercedes-Benz every time you step into it.

We all suffer the urge to be impulsive from time to time. Wait until you are 100% certain before you sign the contract of sale. Once you pay a deposit you own the car, and some dealers will make sure you take delivery of it even if you change your mind.

Sometimes knowing that dealers have to hold stock can work in your favour. If they have a car in stock then they are probably more motivated to sell it at a better price.

Hot Mercedes Buying Tip:

Go to your local dealer first. You will most likely find they are very keen to do business with local residents because they know you are more likely to return for your scheduled Mercedes-Benz service than a travelling customer. A Mercedes-Benz service centre is a good source of repeat business for a Mercedes-Benz Dealership so they will try and entice you to come back for servicing.

How to Finance and insure your Mercedes-Benz tips:

Most car companies have some sort of in house finance and insurance offers. Due to the profile of the average Mercedes owner in Australia, you will find very competitive Mercedes-Benz branded offerings in the dealership. Make sure you ask the amount per month when comparing the finance repayments rather than being fixated on rate. Some finance companies and banks quote low rates however the finance repayments are higher when you add back penalties. As a rule, Mercedes-Benz Finance is designed purely to finance Mercedes-Benz cars so they are quite targeted compared to banks. The same is true for Insurance. It is worth checking before you commit to any lender.

If you take a sensible approach to your Mercedes-Benz predicted future value then you should be able to arrange finance where your Mercedes will be worth the same amount as the "payout" figure - or the amount owing at time of lease expiry. If you are unfortunate enough to get this wrong, your Mercedes-Dealer will probably offer to finance this "shortfall" on the top of your amount financed next time you buy. This is a financially dangerous recipe so be very careful before you do that.

What should you NEVER do?

Don't take a salespersons word about how much your Mercedes-Benz will be worth in the future. They can't predict that because this value depends on many factors. Some reasons a car might depreciate could range from a model change right through to a new entrant into the market segment.

A big mistake made often by first time Mercedes-Benz owners is to go from Mercedes-Benz dealer to dealer waiting until some salesperson promises the Mercedes will be worth more. This is just a mind trick! Make your own decision and stick to it.

Make decisions knowing that all cars (other than rare collectables) tend to depreciate heavily in Australia. Take a view that your Mercedes will reduce in value the more you drive it and the longer you own it.

If you apply these Mercedes-Benz buying tips you will hopefully get a great deal on your new Mercedes-Benz!

Car Hire New Zealand - My First New Zealand Holiday

As I planned my first visit to the stunningly beautiful country of New Zealand, I knew that I wanted the freedom and flexibility to visit everything from the Franz Josef Glacier on the South Island to the vineyards in Hawkes Bay on the North Island. Because I didn't want to waste a minute of my limited time waiting for buses or being constrained by a tour group's itinerary, I knew that I needed a New Zealand rental car to fully enjoy all that the country had to offer. What I quickly discovered was that the car rentals in New Zealand are not only affordable and convenient; they are ideal for exploring the vast array of sites on both of the country's islands.

With a few keystrokes on my computer, I was able to reserve an economical car rental in New Zealand prior to departing on my journey. Because I was flying into Auckland, the company offered to have a representative pick me up at the airport to take me to the rental car office. I was picked up curbside right on time in the car that I was going to rent. I was amazed by the efficiency and grateful that I wasn't going to have to transfer my bags from one car to another at the office. The paperwork process was equally as seamless, as I merely had to show my United States driver's license, passport, and credit card. In less than one hour after arriving in Auckland, I was handed the car keys and on my way. With maps in hand and a full tank of gas in my late model New Zealand rental car, I was starting my independent journey to experience all that the country had to offer.

My first destination was the thermal city of Rotorua, 234 kilometers (145 miles) from Auckland. I must admit that I was a bit nervous the first few minutes of driving on the left side of the road, but within a short time. I was navigating as confidently as the locals. It certainly helped that the highways and roads were well paved, mapped, and signed, and that the vast majority of drivers were courteous and law-abiding. I was thoroughly impressed with New Zealand so far and pleased that I had chosen to drive myself rather than hop aboard a tour bus. Along the way, I stopped in a small town for a quick rest and a meal. I was really beginning to appreciate the freedom that my New Zealand rental car was offering me. Unlike an organized tour, I was able to stop, eat, and rest when I felt like it in the locations that I chose. That first evening I picked up some takeout fish and chips, settled into my modest motel room along the highway, and charted on the map my route for the next following days.

After a week of touring the North Island and thoroughly enjoying my New Zealand car hire holiday that had everything from farm shows to wineries and museums, I was ready to tackle the rugged splendor of the South Island. I had coordinated with the rental car company to drive my car onto the Interislander ferry in the capital city of Wellington. The rental car representatives booked the ticket, and the entire process was amazingly easy. Three hours after boarding, I had arrived on the South Island, drove my car off the ship and began the next leg of my journey.

Driving the less traveled roads of the South Island, I journeyed to national parks, explored the coasts, and even had some time to enjoy the cosmopolitan cities of Christchurch and Dunedin. As my memorable trip came to a close, I returned to the North Island and headed back to Auckland to drop off the car and head to the airport. The return procedure was quick, and the New Zealand rental car representative kindly drove me back to the airport.

My trip to New Zealand was the most memorable and wonderful vacation that I have ever experienced. I had the freedom to explore the country on my terms and time schedule. I was able to see more than just the main tourist attractions and had the pleasure of meeting many of the friendly and welcoming native New Zealanders. I honestly don't know if I would have appreciated as much of the unique culture, diversity, and stunning beauty of the country if I had spent my days on a tour bus. Thankfully, New Zealand is ideal for exploring by rental car and perfect for those travelers looking for a little adventure and a lot of fun. And, of course, I can hardly wait to return to New Zealand for another road trip!

BMW History

Karl Friedrich Rapp is the name of the founder of BMW - one of the biggest world wide car manufacturing companies. BMW or Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) was founded in 1916 as a successor to the Rapp Motor.

Many people think that the logo of BMW comes from a spinning white propeller seen in the background of the blue sky. This may be so but in fact it is known that it also comes from the white and blue flag of Bavaria - the largest state of Germany. The capital city of the state is Munich and this is the place where even today we can find the BMW Headquarters.

In 1916 with the foundation of the company a contract was secured for building V12 engines. These engines were about to be used in the creation of the automobiles from Austro-Daimler. These 12 cylinders V engines were at first used in aircrafts which is the original plan of the BMW Company. Taking in account the time when the company was founded it was very likely for them to continue like that.

However in 1919 after the World War I and the Treaty of Versailles the production of aircraft in Germany was prohibited and that quickly changed the politics of BMW. They began making brakes for the Rail transport. Soon after that BMW was able to design a motorcycle engine which was used for the creation of a motorcycle called with the model name Victoria. However Victoria was not built by BMW but by another company in Nuremberg.

In 1924 BMW made a model of a motorcycle which was the first one they built - the R32. This was a turning point in the BMW history because it was a major achievement and for decades they used its technology - 500 cc engines cooled down by the air. Soon after that BMW added one new innovation - the driveshaft. It came to replace the chain for driving the rear wheel and became a mark of BMW for quite some time.

In the German city Eisenach in 1927 began the production of Dixi - under license but only a year after that the Dixi Company was bought by BMW and they began mass production together with the model Austin Seven.

When the World War I began BMW took its place in it because of the German army's motorized division. They used BMW R75 together with BMW R12. Because of the high need of engines BMW note that period as highly profitable. BMW was the main supplier and even today words like Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht brings many memories. Some of the best planes in that historical time used the BMW aero-engines and till the 1945 more than 30 000 planes with these engines were manufactured.

BMW even made researches which enabled the company to make different jet engines for weapons. With the use of some men power consisting mainly by prisoners of the war BMW made many rocket-based weapons that were used in the war.

Soon after the creation of the rocket-based weapons parts of the company were bombed. Soviets razed to the ground most of the company located in eastern Germany and the base factory in Munich was almost completely destroyed.

After the war BMW was not able to quickly recover because of the need to rebuild the factory in Munich. After that when the restrictions from the Allies applied BMW was banned for three long years in which the company was forbidden from producing motorcycles until 1948 and cars until 1952.

In 1951 the Bavarian company was able to regain all trademarks and it looked like it was finally able to recover and start again from what was left. In 1959 Herbert Quandt became the "wheel" which turned the BMW around because he denied a deal with Daimler-Benz and soon after that he increased his share in the BMW Company up to 50%.

The name of Kurt Golda is stated as the man who incited Quandt to do this step and in the same year BMW began production of the BMW 700 which was based on the BMW 600. This small car used 2-cylinder, air-cooled engines and some years later it was renamed to "LS". Coupe and some cabriolet series were also manufactured.

In 1963 BMW offered dividends to the shareholders of the company and in 1966 the factory in Munich reached its maximum capacity and BMW bought Hans Glas GmbH. This deal enabled BMW to use factories in Landshut and Dingolfing.

With some new style provided by Bertone in 1972 BMW began production of 5 new series and in the years to follow the company made a big progress in the market. For 6 years under the leadership of Bernd Pischetsrieder BMW was able to expand its deal in the market by buying from British Aerospace the Rover Group. Rover Group's history starts in 1986 and till the moment when BMW owned it this company was able to achieve many things like for example the Rover 400 in 1990.

However the Rover was sold to Phoenix Venture Holdings and Ford Motor Company because of some years of losses for BMW. Jokingly the press called the Rover "The English Patient" after the release of the namesake film. This however was not very hard on BMW and they were spared from taking the blame. It looks like that even the British press was not very enthusiastic about the Rover.

BMW began production outside of Germany in 1994. New factories were made in South Carolina and even today the manufacturing of BMW X5 and BMW Z4 is made there. There are factories in some other places too like Oxford, Goodwood and others. After some time of assembly BMW began production in South Africa. Today BMW exports more than 50 000 3 Series vehicles yearly to Japan, USA, Africa, Australia and the Middle East.

In order to serve the market in Eastern Europe and Middle East BMW are planning to begin construction of a new plant located in Cyprus or Greece. A plant in Chennai, India already opened production in 2007.

Car Insurance No Claims Bonus Explained

No Claims Bonus is a term used to describe the number of years you have had Car Insurance without making a claim. Put simply, if you have had Car Insurance for 4 years and you have not made a claim in that time, then you have 4 years No Claims Bonus. No Claim Bonus is probably the single biggest factor affecting the cost of your Car Insurance premium. Every year that goes by without you making a claim is another year of No Claims Bonus.

Generally speaking, the more No Claims Bonus years you have, the cheaper your premium will be for the car you need to insure. This is because Car Insurance companies can see that your history regarding making any accident claim is a good one.

When changing provider, Car Insurance companies will usually ask you to prove your No Claims Bonus in the form of a renewal notice or a letter from your current Car Insurance company. If you have several years of No Claims Bonus but then make a claim, the Car Insurance company will usually apply it's rules of how much to knock back your No Claims Bonus Years. Some companies such as Accept Direct http://www.acceptdirect.co.uk offer to protect your No Claims Bonus for an extra fee during the quotation process. Having full no claims bonus can also entitle you up to 75% discount on your car insurance premium.

Find the Lowest Car Insurance Prices

Everyone wants the lowest car insurance rates. Insurance is a significant cost of modern life, getting the lowest car insurance price can give you a significant saving. Here are are few things to bear in mind in order to get the lowest car insurance prices.

1) The drivers.
At the time you are searching for the lowest car insurance, remember that the drivers of the car make a huge difference to the price of your insurance. Insuring young men is particularly expensive, since they are over-represented in crashes; if possible, do not permit young men to drive your car. Young men searching for insurance should consider which insurer best meets their needs. Another important aspect in finding the lowest insurance prices is the history of the drivers on your insurance policy. If drivers have been involved in accidents, or have been charged with traffic offenses, they will be more expensive to insure. When you are looking for the lowest car insurance estimates, minimize the number of expensive drivers you need to insure.

2) The car.
Your car is one variable which greatly changes the cost of your insurance. Let me illustrate: When buying my second car, I had a $10,000 budget. I found two cars in that price range: a plain, fairly young small car from a reputable maker, and a slightly older, but much sportier version of the same car. After driving each, I'd made up my mind- that sporty one was fantastic! After calling my insurance company, it was a different story. The cost of insuring the sporty version would have been half it's value - I could buy a new car every two years with what I would have had to pay for insuring that car. I went back to the dealership, purchased the sensible car, and kept the money in my pocket. Searching for the lowest insurance means bearing in mind that your car makes a huge difference to the cost of insurance. Sports cars are particularly costly to insure. If you have some kind of sports car, consider insurers who specialise in these types of vehicles. It could be better, though, to buy a car which is cheaper to buy in the first place.

3) Usage.
Many car insurance companies are seeing more thorough information about the way the cars they are insuring will be insured. Some insurers give discounts to drivers who drive less frequently, by electing a 'pay as you drive' policy. Asking insurers if they consider the usage of the vehicle can give you the lowest car insurance rate.

4) The location.
Lastly, a key factor in the price of car insurance is the location the car will be kept. The cost of insurance is relative to the crime and accident rates in your area. Keep the cost of insurance in mind when choosing a neighbourhood. If you reduce the insurer's risk, and your own, in all of these four areas, you will get the lowest car insurance rates.

Comparing Car Insurance in Australia - 7 Things to Think About

There's a wide range of car insurance options in Australia, which is impressive for a country of its size. It's easy to become overwhelmed given the number of companies offering "the best", "the cheapest" or "the best and cheapest" car insurance, but there are 7 things you need to consider before you commit to one particular insurer:

1. What kind of insurance are you looking for?

Compulsory third party insurance - Known as Greenslip Insurance, this is the most basic form of car insurance for an Australian driver and is compulsory for Australian-registered cars. While it doesn't cover damage to the policyholder's car or cars and property of others, it does cover personal injuries of crash victims.

Third party property insurance - This pays for any damage you cause to another person's car or property. However, it doesn't cover the cost of repairs for your own vehicle. Third party fire or theft insurance, an extension of third party insurance, insures you against the loss of your car through theft or fire.

Comprehensive insurance policy - This combines all of the above. As such, if yours and another person's car are damaged through your own negligence, your insurance policy will extend to cover repairs for both parties.

2. Can you buy the policy online?

An insurance company that allows you to sign up for car insurance online has a distinct edge over one that doesn't. Online insurance policies, usually paid for by credit card, are more affordable due to the reduction of processing fees. It's also very convenient for the buyer as it can be done at any hour or any day of the week. You're also likely to make fewer mistakes on the application form because you can take your time in filling it out, and there is less or no pressure for you to complete as compared to completing one over the phone.

3. Do they offer a multi-policy deal?

Many insurance companies provide insurance for the home, travel and health in addition to car insurance. In many cases, insurance companies may offer a more favourable rate to customers who purchase more than one type of insurance from them.

4. What's your demographic?

Did you know that the cost of car insurance premiums can vary based on where you live? Premiums can differ even further based on your address within the state itself as well. Varying intra-state car insurance premiums are mainly down to the risk an insurance company perceives you and your car to be.

Therefore, the higher the risk of your vehicle encountering an accident or being stolen, the higher the premiums you have to pay. For instance, residents of New South Wales, which has a high population density, pay the highest car insurance premiums of any state.

Age and gender too, are parameters that need to be considered when comparing car insurance. Young men are perceived to be more of an insurance risk, and this is reflected in their insurance premiums. Additionally, the owner of a newer, more expensive car is likely to pay higher insurance premiums based on the risk such a vehicle poses for the insurance company.

5. Have you tried asking for a discount from your existing provider?

Sometimes, people compare car insurance when they're thinking of switching to another insurance company. In this case, a person has nothing to lose by asking their current insurer if they're able to match or surpass a cheaper quote from another company. Revisiting the terms of your present car insurance policy may also allow negotiation of better terms for you; there may be discounted premiums for drivers above 25 years of age. Tailoring your car insurance policy to match your personal requirements can make it even more affordable.

6. Look beyond the bottom dollar

A cheap insurance quote is very attractive. However, when comparing quotes from different insurance companies, you need to ensure that the policies themselves are similar too to prevent comparing apples and oranges. By scrutinizing policies closely, you won't wind up paying less but receiving inferior or limited insurance coverage from Insurer A, as opposed to paying Insurer B slightly more in return for more benefits and security.

One of the first things a person looks at when comparing car insurance is the premium paid. At first glance, a cheaper premium is certainly tempting. Having extra cash available is always welcome. Yet, is an annual difference of $200 really such a bargain if, in the event of a write off, the insurance company deems your car worth less than you expected?

You need to ensure that the bottom value an insurance company quotes for your car isn't too far away from your car's actual worth. If the terms of the policy are otherwise in your favour, obtaining an "agreed value" policy is your best bet so that replacing your car won't be such a financial burden in the event of a write off and if the company undervalues it.

7. How does a point-for-point comparison of different policies add up?

There are sure to be similarities when you compare the basic policies of most major car insurers. A consumer needs to look at the cost of the policy and any extra benefits that particular insurer provides and ask about them if they're not immediately obvious. For instance, comprehensive car insurance may entitle you to a hire car if your car needs repairs, until a claim is paid, or your car recovered (if it was stolen). Different insurers also have varying conditions pertaining to no-claim bonus and excess payable.

Different insurers offer different hire car periods that may also vary based on the premium you pay. Additionally, the time it takes to process a claim may take longer (months) than the period to which you're entitled the hire car (days). Additionally, the maximum value insured for items inside the car that are damaged or stolen may vary between companies.

In the event car repairs are needed, most insurance companies have workshops authorized to carry out the necessary repairs. Some people, though, may be more comfortable appointing a mechanic of their own or who can finish the job more quickly. Aside from determining if this option is available to you, be sure to determine who bears the cost of transporting the car to the garage and if roadside assistance is provided.

These are just some of the things you need to consider when you're making a car insurance comparison between different insurance providers. Comparing car insurance policies may not be such a chore when you consider that Australians are paying an excess of more than $3 billion in unneeded comprehensive car insurance coverage.

Cruise in a Mercedes-Benz - How to Buy a Mercedes-Benz For Sale

For many people, the ultimate symbol for "having arrived" in life is the car that is bought and driven. There are many people out there who, after receiving that big promotion go right to trying to find that perfect Mercedes-Benz for sale to add to their garage.

The Mercedes-Benz has a much wider selection of cars and car prices than many people know. Founded in 1881 by Gottlieb Daimier and Karl Benz, the Mercedes-Benz is a German manufacturer who has thousands of dealerships all over the world. Headquartered in Stuttgart, with other international subsidiaries in just about every other country, it has long been considered the best in class vehicle for the rich and well to do. No wonder there are so many who are interested in finding a Mercedes-Benz for sale in their price range.

If you are looking for a Mercedes-Benz for sale and want good gas mileage you might want to wait for their electric vehicles to hit the market. there are a few they are about to release which have better mileage then the gas models and are obviously better for the environment. However, chances are, if you are in the market for a Mercedes-Benz, you probably will live just fine with the poor gas mileage from this otherwise breathtaking car line.
